Herding Sheep (Is far easier than herding kids)

TomO herding sheep - nothing easy about it mate!
TomO herding sheep – nothing easy about it mate!

The other day TomO and I got into a discussion that loosely revolved around what it was like being a parent.

It was an interesting choice of topic given he is most unlikely to become one anytime soon.

So I took the opportunity to tell him like it was; one of the most rewarding things you can ever hope to do.  But added it was a bit like herding sheep sometime…

How do you mean, he asked, with a sly grin on the corner of his mouth.

He knew all too well what I meant.

Yes, sudden deafness when asked to switch off the iPod, or getting ready for bed at a reasonable time, and did I hear you say homework.

Yeah, herding sheep, I mused…

And too highlight just how hard herding sheep is I pulled out this great photograph of him doing just that a few years back!

Selective deafness eh? Some old rams tend to suffer from that too I’m lead to believe Baz! 😉

My mother would agree with you 100%! I have a friend who compares parenting to herding cats, so when this popped into my email I couldn’t help but laugh!

I stayed with a distant cousin last year and she has two boys. After eight hours in their presence–mind you, i wasn’t leaving for three days–I was of the opinion those hellions needed to be spanked. And often. I’ve never before or since been mortified to be seen in public with someone–I was with them! I was praying for the Lord to open a sinkhole up that was just big enough for me! Anyway, at one point she asked me to wrangle her youngest, get him into his car seat, and get his socks and shoes on. I have nieces and nephews, so I wasn’t going to lose. Shortly thereafter I hear her ask where Scottie is… um, in the car seat with his shoes and socks on. She asked how I did that. I, um, told him to get in his seat, buckled him in, and told him not to take his socks and shoes off (which he always does) because I said so. She asked me about it again later when she and I were at dinner. I told her kids are like sharks… they smell fear. 🙂

Ah, Baz… considering how picky I am, do you think that would really be a problem? 😉
