The Jungles of Papua New Guinea (The Kokoda Track)

Isurava Village, situated along the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

I am making plans to head back into the Papuan New Guinean jungle in April next year to walk the Black Cat Track.

I tried to get there a couple of years ago, but civil unrest in the area prevented it. So plans have been made once again, and will provide a great lead in for some climbing in Nepal later in the year!

This area has some of the most pristine jungle in the world…

    Great site!
If you’re into mountains, have you climbed Mt. Wilhelm? I went up in 2009, and the area – of course – is spectacular. It’s not a technical climb, just a steep hike up to 4500m.
I’ve been to PNG 3 times; the last time (2011) I hiked from a spot about 3 miles SW of Mt. Wilhelm (i.e. Betty’s place; if you’ve been to PNG in the Highlands, and even beyond, you’ve heard of Betty Higgins), to Braham Mission, a 4-day trek (then PMV’d to Madang). No words to describe it; it’s what I call investing in my retirement – that is to say, I’m stocking up now for the day when I can’t do these things any more. I can’t think of a better way to spend my money.
Whatever you do, have a great one! Beautiful, beautiful country; no place like it on earth.

      Hi Tim

It is a wonderful country, full of surprises and a great destination for the adventure traveller. I was fortunate to have spent a considerable amount of time living and working in the country and it ignited a passion for the area and its people.

I never managed to climb Mt Wilhelm, although we had a trip planned, for a number of reasons we had to put it off and never got back to it. Hopefully we’ll be on the Black Cat Track over the next few months sometime and I am working to see if we can include Mt Wilhelm at that time.

      Cheers, Baz

    Hey Baz,
Not on topic for this post but is it Alpine Recreation who you used for your climbing trips in NZ?

I’m looking to head over to NZ this winter to do a 5 day nordic skiing tour with Alpine Recreation. They have great reviews (and seem to be the only group doing these types of tours in NZ) but I thought I’d see whether it was the same group.

      Hi Andrew

I’ve no direct experience with them, but they are a very professional outfit and well respected. I have been training with Adventure Consultants in Wanaka, who are high altitude specialists. Regards Baz
