A couple of months ago I decided to put aside my climbing ambitions in Nepal this year after my sister, Debbie, was diagnosed with advanced cancer.

Instead Deb and I went on a road trip a week or so ago with our mother to the Queensland country town where she grew up, having a wonderful time together as a family.

Last Wednesday, TomO, the crown prince, broke his patella, his knee cap as it is more commonly known, in a bad fall in the school gym.

Needless to say it was a traumatic time for Janet and me to see the little bloke in so much pain.

This happened on the day I was due to arrive in Kathmandu to climb Mera Peak and just ahead of the tragic news overnight of a severe earthquake involving large loss of life in Kathmandu.

TomO had surgery on Thursday to repair his patella and all went well and he is recovering at home with lots of ice-cream! Unfortunately this will keep an active young man on the benches for the next few months, but the young bounce back quickly!

My climbing partners on this trip to Nepal headed to Lukla just prior to the earthquake and I’ve had news they are okay…

Janet has always been behind my mountaineering ambition and adventures one-hundred percent, but gave me a hug this morning and said,

“Glad you didn’t go you were needed here for reasons we didn’t know at the time…”

If it had not have been for Deb’s condition, which we would change in a heart beat if we could, I would have been in Nepal. But despite her condition Deb is still looking out for her little brother in ways that big sister’s do and perhaps only the “universe” will ever understand…

Our thoughts go out to all those affected in Nepal and if you are able to support the wonderful Nepalese people via a relief fund, please do.

    Baz – I have read this post twice. I was oblivious, until this post, of your wife’s condition. My prayers are with you both. I know in my gut that the two of you are fighters, and have a great deal of fortitude, vision. I appreciate your spirt of kicking butt in this life. I hope TomO is experiencing some good healing. He looks like a wildman, like his dad. Good post.

    I a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. You were meant to stay home. There will be more wonderful adventures for the amazing Baz and his entire family in the near future.

    I’m a believer, alright. You were meant to be at home for your son, and your sister, not in Nepal at this terribly sad time. My heart goes out to all victims and their families in Nepal. Prayers for healing for your sister, and gallons of ice cream & quick recovery for the crown prince.

    Wow. That is an interesting way for the universe to work. Was wondering about your trip after I heard about the Earthquake. Sorry to hear about your sister, will send her my good thoughts and prayers.

    Good to hear that Tom-O is recovering well. Also good to know that your climbing partners are okay. It will take a long while for Nepal to recover. Very sad.

    Wow. A fractured patella. Sorry to hear it was so serious.

    Wishing him a speedy recovery. It’s amazing but how the universe works in weird and wonderful ways. Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Best wishes.

    I believe! It keeps me from getting too worked up about things working out or not… I may have a plan I’m preparing for, but I’ve learned to just do the next thing and trust. Glad you’re safe! TomO will heal quickly, prayers for your sister. Love that you put your time with her… Your true values… ahead of momentary fun or adventure. May we all remember to do the same!!
