An Outhouse (With a view)

An Outhouse (With a view)

How is this one at Pioneer Hut high up on Fox Glacier, New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

Almost an expedition to get to the little Red House from the hut and the drop off is quite dramatic, but hey, you’ve got to love the view!

A relative told me a story from the days of his youth in the eastern Kentucky hills. This goes back to sometime in the early 1940s. He and a bunch of other boys decided to play a prank one night on a grumpy old hillbilly who didn’t like them. When an opportunity presented itself, they dug a new pit just behind the man’s outhouse, and then moved the outhouse over the new pit. They hid the original pit opening under a mat of brush and leaves, so at night, the old man wouldn’t notice it. Well, the little rascals hid themselves up in the hills, and waited under the cover of darkness. Finally the man came out to use his outhouse, walked right over the brush mat, and fell through into the pit. The boys could hear him cursing, and he could hear them laughing up in the hills…. The relative was still alive years later to tell the story, so I suppose the old hillbilly never figured out who it was. His temper was probably not improved any by the experience of falling into his own pit.
