Mutawintji Gorge is spectacular for its towering rusty red rock cliffs and overhangs, its magnificent rock pool, cool and soothing on a hot outback day…
We took the time to wile away the hours at the base of the cliffs, and later climbing them…an oasis in the desert, a timeless place, inhabited by an ancient people.
We have a map of Australia on the wall, that we mark with places we are going to go and see. We manage to do a little each year. Thanks for adding a new place to our list.
Gems like that are good to find and visit. They give peace and comfort. We visited one of our favorites a week ago called Backbone. Steep cliffs carved by eons of flowing waters from the ice age and rivers have left a jewel tucked among the corn fields of Iowa.

I’m a Kiwi, but there’s something about Aussie’s red heart that grips me – great photo

It is magical, and wish I could spend more time out there. Mind you, your Southern Alps is pretty good. I was climbing there this time last year….

The whole area is magnificent, ad there is also a large wilderness area that can only be accessed on foot…thinking of going in for a few days!
